When I left the west coast I heard that Joan Osborne had joined the Dead in some capcity. I don't know if it was for a few gigs or as a full member. Did she contibute with any musicallity or just as a novelty.I do have one of her albums and still haven't made up my mind if I like her voice or not.So if indeed this happened when was it and as you usually do link to a show.

I love her on Sugaree. It's one of those Jerry songs that I like when others sing. Heres a youtube compilation I came across.

I can't hightlight the youtube mix(only highlights one track) but if you type Joan Osborne Grateful Dead in the youtube box a compilation of 33 tracks pops up.

I didn't catch her with The Dead (b/c post Jer I just don't care), but did see a show with The Funk Brothers and thought she was great in that format:

And maybe her best tune:

This is a nice compilation of Joan with the Dead on the 2003 tour.

As are the shows she did with Phil and Friends:

thanks, some effort went in to your response and I do appreciate it greatly. I will check it out and I said the only cd I have of hers' is called Relish and I'll need some more listens to decide whether I like it or not.
One female voice/group that is hauntingly spacey in their own rite are the Cowboy Junkies. Yes I might be slow on the draw here but whenever I go to my library I search them out. Thanks again for your legwork.....

I absolutely love Joan's voice. The one show I saw when she was with the Dead, I left the show thinking that they should have let her sing more. She only did a couple of numbers and some back up singing. I personally would have preferred that she sing some / most of the Jerry tunes as opposed to Bobby.

As noted in a previous posst, she also has done some great stuff with the Funk Brothers. Definitely worth searching for and checking them out.
Also some of her own live shows that circulate are worth searching for as she usually has a pretty good mix of covers and her own music.

As for her own music, including the album you mentioned...meh. Doesn't really do much for me. She can sing though. The woman has a great set of pipes. I prefer when she sings other people's songs as opposed to her own.

I'm not a huge fan of the Cowboy Junkies but I do like to give them a listen now and then. I'm sure you already know that there are Junkies shows available here on the Archive (and if you don't you're going to be busy!):
